Techno museum, but not only - Frankfurt opens the world's first museum for electronic music. Experience your favorite genre up close.
The world's first and only museum for electronic music will open in Frankfurt in autumn this year. The Momem, Museum of Modern Electronic Music. The location is in the heart of Frankfurt at the Hauptwache. Not far from where Sven Väth opened his legendary techno club Omen over 30 years ago. The mezzanine level of the Hauptwache has previously housed the Children's Museum and is now becoming an interactive museum for everything to do with electronic music.
There is a good reason why the museum is being built in Frankfurt. Because two pioneers of the Frankfurt techno scene came up with it. Alexander Azary, once a DJ himself and now chairman of Friends of Momem and Talla 2XLC, who also made a career as a DJ and also gave lectures at universities on the history of techno.
They had the idea of opening a museum for electronic music back in 2012. At that time, unfortunately, this could not be realized for various reasons. “It's not a pure techno museum!” Emphasize the organizers, however. All genres of electronic music will be represented at Momem Frankfurt: ambient, electronika, experimental, house, techno-house, as well as all techno genres up to drum'n'bass and others. The museum is intended to shed light on the history and origin of all electronic music and to revive and actively shape the music scene.
Momem Frankfurt - An interactive place for friends of electronic music
Many modern museums have this claim and not only want to show the past, but also want to take part in current cultural developments and influence them. That is also a concern of the Momem in Frankfurt. The museum concept combines museum, stage, academy and bar. Of course, a club should not be missing in an interactive place like the Momem, where interested parties come together to learn everything about techno and electronic music. This was planned from the start and is intended to enrich the Frankfurt club scene and to finance the project with the support of the City of Frankfurt.
In the context of the general genre techno, not only music and history should be considered. Areas such as fashion, design, instruments and technology and the influence that the music scene had on them at the time are also interesting. There will also be exhibitions on topics such as genres, clubs, labels and artists of electronic music.
Frankfurt politics, financing difficulties and most recently the corona pandemic have delayed the completion of the Momem until now. There is not yet a fixed date for the start, should the situation calm down by autumn, around 3000 to 5000 guests are expected at the opening.

Frankfurt as the cradle of the techno scene - opening in autumn 2021
Since Frankfurt is considered the cradle of Germany's techno scene, many enthusiastic ravers will certainly not miss this event and ensure full halls. Young people's interest in electronic music is still huge, say the founders of Momem Frankfurt. But until now there has not been a place where you could find out about the origin and development, discover new things and be inspired at the same time.
That should succeed in Momem Frankfurt. There should be regular events such as readings, seminars, films and even workshops. Producers as well as musicians, DJs and designers should be invited to show their art and pass it on to the next generation.
The interior work has already been completed and, with its black walls and light installations, is reminiscent of a techno club. You will be able to hear a lot of music at the moment, apparently even during normal operation. There should be pods in which you can listen to information about various DJs and their music. A spectrum of analog and digital instruments is exhibited in the instrument area. For example, you can try out an analog Moog synthesizer in the interactive part of the museum, explains Alexander Azary.
Techno, rave and other electronic music fans: keep your fingers crossed that the opening date in autumn 2021 can be kept and then let's go to Frankfurt.
